When applying for a job, there is more to think about than just "I want this job, I have to get it". One must be prepared to present their 4 P's of marketing themselves, Product, Price, Place and Promotion. These 4 elements are known as the marking mix and they assist employers in identifying if you are the best candidate for the position being applied for. This marketing mix is very important when it comes to presenting yourself in front of the employer.
First I will start off by describing Product. When it comes to marketing yourself for a job position, you are the product that is trying to be sold. You are marketing yourself to the company, in hopes they will invest in you as an employee. You must be what the company needs and wants; you must be valuable to that company and present beneficial traits that the company will be able to utilize you for.
Next there is Price, you must be able to provide the the employer with that you believe to be a reasonable wage for you to receive in exchange for your service to the company. This tends to be a tricky part in the application process because if the company believes your asking rate to be too high, then they may not consider you for the position, but too low and you could be getting less compensation for your work than you deserve. Either way, give the price that you believe you deserve for the position, and if the company agrees or disagrees will determine if that is, indeed, the best fitting job for you at the end of the day.
Moving on to Place. This is where you and the employer decides, depending on your commute and schedule, if the the position being applied for is worth the time it takes you to get there and the amount of time you can commit to the company. If you live an hour away from the work place and an applicant of equal qualities lives 5 minutes away, chances are the company would rather hire the closer candidate because they have less of a risk of being late or having excuses not to come in to work. Also, will the distance you are going to travel to work be worth the time and pay you will get out of the job? Will they have too many or too little hours expected for you to be working?
Last, but not certainly least, Promotion. This is a very important piece of the marketing mix because this is how you will show what getting the position being applied for is important to you. You must dress appropriately and present yourself in a charming manner. Be sure to do your research about the position you are applying for in order to show that you have what the company is looking for. Be sure to ask any questions you may have about the position and show that you are truly interesting and what the job.
